CLAYTON VALLEY STUDENT HANDBOOK 1958-1959

FORWARD BY DAN DELLA, PRINCIPAL

To all students helping to inaugurate our new Clayton Valley High School, may I offer a most sincere welcome. An unusual experience, different from that of entering an established school, lies ahead for each one of you; that of establishing the traditions and standards that will guide the many students who will follow in your footsteps at Clayton Valley High School. A tremendous responsibility has been placed on your shoulders and only by working cooperatively together can we look back upon this year as having “laid a solid foundation” upon which we can build in the future.

We can be proud of our new school: a beautiful campus in a beautiful setting; an outstanding faculty ready to guide you to greater heights but the real success of our new school depends on YOU the students. Proper attitude and active participation will guide us toward establishing our goals. May your tenure at Clayton Valley High School be a most enjoyable and profitable experience for you.

                                                                      Very sincerely yours,

                                                                      Dan G. Della, Principal

NEW REGISTRATION SYSTEM

MAY 1962: Students will select their own teacher, classes, and periods for next year. Programming will be done in the gym during PE, starting with the juniors, on Friday, June 1. The sophomores will program on Monday, June 4, and the freshman on Tuesday, June 5th.

Three days prior to programing students will be given all the information they need in home room. In the gym there will be department representatives at designated tables to give class information. This system is modified after the “college” format .

CV’S OLD TRADITION, THE “ZOMBIE”

“The Zombie!”  What makes this breaded muffin filled with melted cheese into Clayton Valley’s favorite brunch time snack? Second period ends and the majority of the school races off to the brunch carts for their zombie before they are gone. Pam Hargis, a senior, tells us “I love them because they fill me up and give me energy the rest of the day”. Shelly Scott, a senior, says, “I love the melted cheese in side”. After taking a survey 90% of the students buy a zombie every Monday, Wednesday and Friday when they are sold. Brooks Shepard, says “the zombie has been here for ever since I was a freshman, and also here the years my older brothers and sisters were here”.

CV FOOTBALL WELCOMES HERC PARDI

NOVEMBER 1, 1991: Alumni Herc Pardi (1975) and former successful football coach at Pittsburgh High School will be the head football coach here at Clayton Valley. In 1991 Coach  Pardi”s team won the North Coast Section Championship and one of the few wins over De La Salle. This season, for the first time since 1980, Clayton Valley will host Varsity football games on campus. Coach Pardi will bring with him five off campus coaches who assisted him at Pittsburg. Alumni Don Rath, the junior varsity coach said” Herc is the most organized coach I’ve ever ben around.”

NOTORIOUS KNOB KNAPPERS?

JANUARY 1978: The immature pranks of a few have cost the Mt. Diablo School District $300. The big prank is “doorknob stealing”.Approximately 100 classroom door knobs are missing. It will cost money to replace, it causes inconvenience and a safety hazzard. Over the past several weeks no knobs have been recovered. The penalty will be suspension. If you have information contact the custodians.

EAGLES FIRST IN DISTRICT TO OBTAIN “LITTLE AXE PLAQUE”

JANUARY 1963: With the opening of Ygnacio Valley High School and the transfer of many CV teachers to Ygnacio a natural rivalry was established. Newly transferred, Mr. Bill Noble student activities director and Mr. Dick Ellis made a brass plaque mounted on walnut wood showing the profiles of an “Indian” for Ygnacio and an “Eagle” for Clayton. The plaque would go to the winner of the football game, the winner of the basketball game and the winner of the baseball contest. Clayton claimed the first possession by defeating the Warriors Friday night.

CLAYTON VALLEY HIGH SCHOOLS ALTAIRS

The highest award a student at Clayton Valley can achieve are the Altairs (Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Grand Altair) They were established by the first graduating class in1960. That was 48 years ago. The Altair is the name of the brightest star in the Constellation Aguile, the Eagle. Members of the Senior Class vote for those students they feel best exemplify the Altair.

Scholarship Altair: judged by transcript grades but also the course difficulty

Service Altair: exemplifies the virtue of self giving both at school and in the community

Leadership Altair: ability to motivate and encourage others to reach their goal.

Grand Altair: students with a 4.0 GPA & posses the characteristics of service & leadership.

FIELD TURF MAKES ITS DEBUT AT CV

OCTOBER 20, 2004: The highly anticipated field is here after fifteen months of fund raising and construction. A ceremony will be held October 29th in honor of alumni Steve Gonsalves (1971) and his wife Debra (Cullum) (1972) the major donors for the renovated facility, which will be named “Gonsalves Stadium.”Other contribution of both money and services to the track and field included the Clayton Valley Athletic Boosters, Mt. Diablo School District, numerous business groups, the student body, coaches and community members.

A brick fund raiser brought in approximately $70,000 In exchange for $75 or $100, donors got an engraved brick in the stadium walk way. Larger donations were given granite slabs.

The Gonsalves donated the first $500,000 and athletic director Pat Middendorf rallied other groups for their contributions. Gonsalves Stadium will be armed with security cameras made available by the Clayton Business and Community Association. The renovation included the all weather track, lighting and press box. New bleacher seating was also a must.
